In Memory of Pioneer Member Peggy Ford

One of PYFL's early Pioneer members passed away recently and we would like to send a tribute in her name, Peggy Ford. She was part of the Hueneme Rhinos for many years and sat on the PYFL board as treasurer for a few years. Peggy Rose Ford, 92, Oxnard, CA passed away on March 26, 2018. Born to Iva and George Spicer on October 21, 1925, in Long Beach, CA. Peggy graduated from Long Beach Poly H.S. in 1943, where she competed in swimming, basketball, tennis, golf, and bowling. In 1958 she was married to William E. Ford, also of Long Beach, they eventually moved to Ventura County in 1960. She worked for the Southern California Retail Clerks Union for 36 years, retiring in 1986. In 1984 she was named employee of the year while working at Smith's Food King in Oxnard. Peggy was involved with various organizations throughout her lifetime, as a member or volunteer. She was a group leader with the Camp Fire Girls of America from 1971 to 1976, taking her group of girls on camping trips, participating in community events, and learning life skills along the way. Peggy was also a member of The Knights of Columbus, where she loved working bingo nights, and the Oxnard Elks, where she always looked forward to working the Friday night fish fries. She also volunteered at the Oxnard Police Department, which she took great pride in, and also at St. John's Hospital in Oxnard for many years. Of all her volunteer work, Peggy was most passionate about being a part of the Port Hueneme Rhinos, where she held various positions from 1974 to 2001. She loved watching former Rhino players go on to play in high school, college, and even a few in professional football. Peggy will be remembered for her tireless work ethic, dedication, integrity, passion, and the desire to always help others when needed.


Peggy is preceded in death by mother, Iva Valardi, husband William Ford, and lifelong friend Russ Burns. She is survived by children Michelle Nickerson and Michael Ford. Son-in-law Eric Nickerson, and grandchildren BarbaraTaylor, Jennifer Epps (Keith), Diana Adams, and Henry "Bo" Adams.
